A new study is investigating whether men who use erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra are more likely to have heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular risks compared with those who do not.
The study, which was published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association, analyzed information from 5,000 men who were prescribed Viagra for erectile dysfunction. They had a history of heart disease, stroke or other cardiovascular disease. The researchers analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHEIS) to determine if the study was right for them.
"We looked at the number of men who used Viagra and the risk of heart disease, and we looked at their age, as well as their smoking status," says study co-author Dr. John P. Bajka, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, who was not involved in the study.
He said that while there was no statistically significant difference in the risk of heart disease and cardiovascular disease for men who had used Viagra, those who had used a prescription medication were at increased risk.
In addition to heart disease, Viagra users also had an increased risk for stroke, a condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, which is a form of vision loss caused by an injury to the optic nerve. The condition is known as non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy and is characterized by loss of vision, loss of hearing, hearing impairment and ringing in the ears. Bajka and his colleagues studied the association between use of Viagra and the risk of stroke, coronary artery disease, non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy and coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). The study also found that those who had used Viagra had a greater increase in the risk of a cardiovascular event compared with those who had not used a prescription medication. The researchers concluded that, based on their findings, doctors and researchers should prescribe Viagra only to men who have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease and who have cardiovascular risk factors.
Bajka and his colleagues also found that those who were prescribed Viagra had a greater increase in the risk of a coronary event, such as a heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular events.
The study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Dr Hilary Jones, who regularly appears as a health expert on ITV, told: “The word ‘breakthrough’ is often used in health headlines, but new treatments which are truly groundbreaking come along far less frequently. Eroxon is an innovative therapy which has the potential to change the lives of millions of men with erectile dysfunction.”
Dr Catherine Hood, a sexual health specialist, added: “When they were launched back in the 90s, PDE5i medicines were a game-changer, but they are not an option for many men due to pre-existing health conditions, interactions with their prescription medicines or simply because of the time they take to work.”
In a 12-week clinical trial of 250 people, two out of three reported a significant improvement in their ability to achieve and maintain an erection. The figure rose to 80 per cent for those with severe erectile dysfuncion.
